The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) has achieved remarkable growth in the first quarter of 2025, positioning itself as the leading securities market in West Africa. As of May 18, the GSE's main equities index had surged by over 30%, outperforming its regional counterparts. Notably, the financial stocks index also experienced a significant rise of approximately 33%.
Abena Amoah, Managing Director of the GSE, attributed this impressive performance to renewed investor confidence and increased market activity. She expressed optimism that the exchange's growth trajectory would continue, potentially surpassing other markets across the continent by the end of the year.
“As of May 18th, the GSE equities market has recorded a very impressive performance. Our index was up over 30 percent, the best in West Africa, our financial stock index was also up by about 33 percent, and there is renewed investor confidence and robust market activity”, she said.
The GSE's market cap has reached over GHS 143 billion, reflecting a more than 70% growth compared to the same period last year. Additionally, the Fixed Income Market has shown robust activity, with traded volumes increasing by about 53% year-on-year, totaling approximately GHS 87 billion.
In a related development, Kasapreko PLC, a prominent Ghanaian beverage manufacturer, has announced plans to list approximately 25% of its equity shares on the GSE's main market by the end of 2025. This move is part of the company's strategy to expand its growth and investment globally. Kasapreko has demonstrated strong financial performance, with a 45% year-on-year revenue growth in 2024, reaching GHS 2.7 billion, driven by robust domestic sales and increasing export demand.
The GSE's outstanding performance in the first quarter of 2025 underscores its resilience and investors' growing confidence in Ghana's capital markets. With ongoing efforts to enhance market capitalization and attract new listings, the exchange is well-positioned for sustained growth and increased prominence in the African securities landscape.
