In a bold move to elevate its status in the global gold industry, the GOLDBOD has announced plans to establish the ‘Ghana Gold Village,’ envisioned as Africa’s leading hub for gold jewellery and ornaments. This initiative, spearheaded by the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), aims to add significant value to the country’s gold production and position Ghana as a continental leader in gold craftsmanship and trade.
Mr. Sammy Gyamfi, CEO of GoldBod, revealed the plans during the Mining in Motion Summit in Accra. He emphasized that the Gold Village would mirror the famed Dubai Gold Souk, serving as a central marketplace for African gold jewelry and ornaments. “Let me also say that the GoldBod is open to symbiotic partnerships to actualize President Mahama’s vision of establishing a ‘Gold Village’ in Ghana,” Gyamfi stated.
The Ghana Gold Village is part of GoldBod’s broader strategy to tighten regulatory controls, curb gold smuggling, and build a transparent gold trading system. Since its establishment, GoldBod has achieved significant milestones, including, for the first time in the country’s history, gold exports from the artisanal small-scale mining (ASM) sector surpassing those from large-scale producers.
Mr. Gyamfi invited global stakeholders, including the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA), the World Gold Council, and the OECD, to collaborate with Ghana to build a responsible, sustainable, and profitable mining ecosystem. “Ghana is ready. The GoldBod is prepared. And together, we can sail to greater heights in the mining sector—where the environment is protected, lives are improved, and communities are uplifted,” he concluded.
This initiative aligns with Ghana’s historical identity as the “Gold Coast” and its current status as Africa’s leading gold producer. By focusing on value addition and formalizing the gold trade, Ghana aims to maximize the economic benefits of its mineral wealth and establish itself as a premier destination for gold jewellery in Africa.
The Ghana Gold Village is expected to not only boost the country’s economy but also create employment opportunities, enhance tourism, and strengthen foreign exchange reserves. As Ghana embarks on this transformative journey, the success of the Gold Village will depend on effective implementation, stakeholder collaboration, and sustained commitment to excellence in the gold industry.
